Memorial Day, a day of remembrance, honors those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Among the countless heroes is Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, a U.S. Navy SEAL who exemplified bravery and selflessness. The CrossFit workout “Murph”  has become a tradition within the CrossFit community to honor his memory each Memorial Day. This workout serves as a testament to Lt. Murphy’s indomitable spirit and embodies the dedication and sacrifice of all fallen heroes.

Lt. Michael P. Murphy, born on May 7, 1976, in Smithtown, New York, was a remarkable individual. As a child, he demonstrated an unwavering commitment to others, always striving to do what was right. Following his passion for service, Murphy enlisted in the U.S. Navy and later became a Navy SEAL.

Lt. Murphy’s defining moment came on June 28, 2005, during Operation Red Wings in Afghanistan. While leading a four-man reconnaissance team, Murphy and his team found themselves vastly outnumbered by enemy forces. Despite being critically wounded, Murphy valiantly exposed himself to enemy fire to call for reinforcements, ultimately sacrificing his life for his team. His unwavering courage and selflessness earned him the highest military honor, the Medal of Honor, posthumously.

Following Lt. Murphy’s death, his legacy resonated with many, and it was through the CrossFit community that his memory found a unique expression. It was in 2005, shortly after his passing, that Lt. Murphy’s favorite workout became a way to honor his sacrifice and inspire others.

The “Murph” workout consists of a one-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 air squats, and another one-mile run, all performed while wearing a 20-pound weighted vest or body armor. This challenging workout was not only a reflection of Lt. Murphy’s physical abilities as a Navy SEAL but also a testament to his mental fortitude.

Word of the workout spread quickly within the CrossFit community, and it was soon adopted as a way to pay tribute to Lt. Murphy and all fallen soldiers. The workout embodies the qualities that Murphy exemplified: resilience, determination, and unwavering dedication to duty.

Over the years, the “Murph” workout has gained significant popularity, particularly within the CrossFit community. Each Memorial Day, thousands of CrossFit gyms worldwide unite to participate in this grueling workout, honoring Lt. Murphy’s memory and paying respect to fallen heroes.

Participating in the “Murph” workout is more than just a physical challenge; it is an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by men and women in uniform. Athletes push themselves to their limits, often embracing the discomfort and pain to honor those who laid down their lives for their country.

The CrossFit community’s embrace of the “Murph” workout extends beyond Memorial Day. Many gyms incorporate the workout throughout the year, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose. The event not only raises awareness of the sacrifices made by military personnel but also generates funds for various charities supporting veterans and their families.

The “Murph” workout serves as a powerful symbol of remembrance, unity, and gratitude within the CrossFit community, bringing people together to honor and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. As we strive to complete each rep and push ourselves beyond our limits, we carry Lt. Murphy’s spirit of selflessness and courage within us. Through the “Murph” workout, we not only pay tribute to an extraordinary individual but also reaffirm our commitment to never forget the heroes who have shaped our nation’s history.
